A successful walk that started at Lafayette Park right in front of the White House and ended at the Washington Memorial in the name of SlutWalk DC was held this weekend on Saturday, August 13th, 2011. This successful event was a part of an International event that has been circulating the globe with a tremendous amount of support and community recognition to help end domestic violence and rape culture for all genders and races. Organizers for this year’s event in the nation’s capital are Samantha and Shawn Wright for SlutWalkDC and Javon Wilkins and Fallon Johnson for Sanity Gurlz.

The event that started in Canada has been so captivating for the people that its meaning transcends the negative word association and gives people a new outlook on what to expect and what not to expect from someone just because of what they wear or do. Support for the event was great from all over the DMV area. With a multitude of speakers and vendors giving out information like HIPS and body painting going on, there was something for everyone.
Speakers engaged the audience in helpful techniques that may save their lives as well inspirational stories. One that rings true to us is when a speaker recalled her experience dealing with a city official in her assault case where the official addressed her case as weak, wanting to know if you want to continue with the case. This struck a nerve with one of the attendees whom erupted in expression with,
“What a BITCH!”
The official identified that the reason her case was so weak was because of what she wore and that she spoke about sex openly that was the reason for her sexual assault. How stupid and senseless is that? The speaker was actually being trained in sexual education.
Also speaking, was a teacher of self defense giving examples of what to do when approached in a inappropriate manner. Showcasing gestures and phrases to use to fend off your attacker like “NO”, “Back-OFF”, and “This is not OK!” Check out the video below to see the speaker:
During the event and unpredicted to us rain storm down poured upon the attendees giving a must needed cool down from the walk to the main stage while water was being passed out for the thirty and a donation bucket going around for proceeds to be donated to DC Rape Crisis Hotline. What is so awesome about the attendees to SlutWalk DC, they didn’t mind the rain and welcomed it as a cool splash of water from the heat and was waiting for the speakers and didn’t miss a queue for every word of humor and every meaningful speech.
In conclusion the event was a successful one, and with hopes that it will continue in 2012. We proudly support the cause. The rain let just long enough for the event to complete and as soon as it was the flood gates opened and the storm returned. What an absolutely great completion to a glorious day...
